Andrew Sabin Family Foundation Scholarships for Marine Science - Spring 2010
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is pleased to announce the next competition for the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation Scholarships for undergraduate students (similar to the former Frankel Foundation Scholarships). These scholarships are available to outstanding Stony Brook University undergraduate students majoring in Marine Science, Marine Vertebrate Biology or the Marine Environment track of the Environmental Studies degree and are up to $4,000 in value. Scholarships may be used to enable participation in a marine science activity which places a financial burden on a student beyond normal costs of an undergraduate education. These scholarships can be used to take courses at remote locations or at marine institutions anywhere in the world, or to conduct marine research with scientists anywhere in the world during the academic year or during winter or summer terms, including with, but not limited to, SoMAS faculty. Students must have a GPA above a 3.0 to be considered for this scholarship. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply. Under exceptional circumstances, freshman with an immediate need and a compelling plan for the scholarship will also be considered.
To be considered, please submit the following:
- A two page essay describing what you would like to do with the award money and why this award would enhance your Stony Brook University education. You should also discuss why you are interested in marine science, what you hope to study during your experience, and why participating in this experience will benefit your long term career plans. You should also indicate how you would use the money (e.g. tuition, stipend, housing, travel, supplies). Details and quality of writing are both important for these essays.
- Transcript from Stony Brook University (unofficial is OK) as well as transcripts from any other undergraduate institution attended.
- You must have three (3) letters of recommendation with at least one from a faculty member, although 2 or 3 from faculty is best.
- A one page resume highlighting out-of-classroom academic experiences, particularly in marine science.
Letters should be signed and sent to:
